Black cab making in Britain is feared to be under threat after staff spotted their machinery for sale on a website.

Workers stormed out of the LTI factory in Coventry when presses and tools were advertised online.

Unite union rep Martin Stribbling said: "Staff are worried the factory could close. For them to find out through the internet was terrible - a huge shock."

The 130 workers staged a mass walkout on Tuesday and could vote to strike.

LTI boss Peter Shillcock said: "We weren't aware of the advert. It was a mistake and not our instructions.

"We are committed to fully involving unions."

LTI is the largest remaining British black cab maker. Staff fear their jobs may be lost to China.

Name any joint venture with china which didn't result in a shift of production overseas !!!

Our biggest local employer has recently ceased manufacturing on site but still assembles from bought in components the quality has gone down considerably but as long as they can pay the workers in romania,india and china ( they shut the mexican factory after only 18 months when the workers demanded pay parity with the uk) half or less they ain't bothered price is everything not many people buy on quality these days so production moves overseas until their living standards rise above ours and then jobs will come back to the uk Simple Economic Reality

The jobs are already lost IMO.

They just needed to find the best way of informing the workforce. This wasn't it.

That's been on the cards for a few years.

We're already there! Im looking at what I own and all of it is of foreign origin except for books, newspapers and some food......my cars are Swedish, Czech or Spanish Built, The PC Im using is made In Japan.

Its worrying....How in hell can britain survive internationally when it buys so many imports from abroad off the back of so little being produced and exported from here, small wonder we are a £trillion in debt when we spend more than we make.
