AN EVIL mini-cab driver who preyed on young women over a 15-year period has been told to expect life imprisonment. Paul Hewitt, 50, of east Hull, sexually assaulted five girls and women aged between 13 and 21, but police believe he may have targeted many more. As a private hire driver in the city, he drove his vulnerable female passengers to deserted areas late at night and subjected them to the attacks. Despite four previous separate trials at Hull Crown Court, a jury has never been able to convict him until now when it was told of all his offending. Now, the mother of one of his victims, a 13-year-old girl who was raped by Hewitt, says she hopes he will spend the rest of his life in prison. The woman said: "We are all relieved at the verdict. Some of the victims have waited a long time for this. He should never be allowed out. "My daughter was strong enough to tell us what he had done and end his reign of terror. Hopefully he will never be able to hurt anyone ever again. "If he was an animal he would be a weasel. He is sly, [edited by admin] and manipulative. He is pure evil." It took the jury just four hours to unanimously convict Hewitt of two rapes, two indecent assaults, threats to kill, two assaults by penetration, two counts of sexual activity with a child and three counts of possessing horrific indecent images and videos of children at the worst possible level. Hewitt was finally brought to justice after a girl reported her rape ordeal to the police. He had threatened to kill her if she told anyone, but the child ignored his threats and told her parents. When the police investigated the case they discovered another teenager had reported him for rape previously, but had been too terrified to go to court and other women had also reported he had sexually assaulted them in his mini-cab. Hewitt attacked his first victim in December 1995 after she caught his cab home from a nightclub in the city centre. Instead of taking her home, Hewitt drove the 19-year-old to Hessle Foreshore, where he sexually assaulted her. Two separate juries failed to reach a verdict on her case. On February 9, 2001, he indecently assaulted a 17-year-old girl. Instead of taking her home, he drove her to Pickering Park, west Hull, and subjected her to a sexual assault. She said: "He told me he was going to have a 'bit of fun'. I tried to push him off, but he was too strong. I was upset and terrified. I was crying and shaking when I got home. It was the first ever time I had gone out. I couldn't face going out afterwards in case I bumped into him." She had reported the incident to the police but was too scared of him to go to trial. On October 28, 2001, he indecently assaulted a 21-year-old barmaid who had called a cab. She had previously asked the company he worked for not to send Hewitt because he had been "suggestive and inappropriate" in the past. The woman told the taxi company, taxi licensing officials and the police and went to trial but the jury failed to believe her. Detective Constable Craig Nicholson said: "He is a predator who has been offending on women for the past 15 years. We have had multiple allegations by multiple women who were all vulnerable and he exerted a position of authority on them. "They had trusted him as a cab driver to take them home safely. He is evil and has shown no remorse. He intimidated them and threatened them to gain their compliance. "We believe there could be more victims out there." Hewitt tutted and shook his head as the jury delivered its verdict. He claimed none of the incidents ever happened. Judge Roger Thorn QC said: "He faces life imprisonment and imprisonment for public protection. There is no point obtaining psychiatric reports when this man is in a state of complete denial. I order a report to assess dangerousness." Hewitt worked as a self-employed private hire driver in west Hull until 2003 and then opened a second-hand shop in Hessle Road and sold items at car boot sales on the Internet. http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.u ... ticle.html |
