A DEALER on the run for nine years over drug offences was caught "red-handed" with his "mobile drug shop" in Leeds after police smelt cannabis coming from his car.

When Jameel Ahmed, 33, was arrested police discovered he had been living under a fake identity in Leeds since 2000 after jumping bail in Luton where he had been caught with nearly 900 ecstasy tablets worth £10,000 and 335g of cannabis worth £1,920.

But in September last year, police smelt cannabis coming from Ahmed's car which was parked up on Shire Oak Street, Headingley.

They found 45 deals of cannabis worth £675 in the vehicle along with £375 cash.

Police then searched his apartment on Regents Quay, Bowman Lane, Hunslet, where they found seven mobile phones, £12,000 worth of cannabis and £3,400 cash.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Ahmed, who paid £1,500 a month for the luxury apartment, had worked as a taxi driver in the city.

He said he didn't drink or take drugs himself but dealt cannabis to fund a gambling habit.

Ahmed was arrested in September under a false name but his true identity was revealed after he was fingerprinted.

Jailing him for a total of nine years and three months, Judge Paul Hoffman said: "It's plain you have been a drug dealer and dealing in a very substantial way indeed and of course having been trusted by the court in Luton to return for sentence, you absconded thereby committing a bail offence.

"You were on the run for almost nine years during which time you assumed a new identity which you gave to the police and in respect of which you acquired a driving license. In that new identity you went on to deal drugs again while on bail."

The Judge added: "In relation to the Leeds indictment, it's plain you were drug dealing again in a substantial way.

"You were found in possession of a kilo and a half of cannabis, many thousands of pounds, 45 deals in your car – your car which was obviously a mobile drug shop... and you don't seem to have learned anything from your previous brush with the law in Luton."

Ahmed admitted two counts of possessing drugs with intent to supply in Luton, breach of bail as well as three charges in Leeds which included possessing cannabis with intent, possession of criminal property (cash) and possessing a false ID document.
