Cab driver attack is 'horrendous'

TAXI drivers from Barry are demanding more protection after a weekend attack left two drivers needing hospital treatment.

When a man jumped into Andrzej Szymanowicz’s cab in Ludlow Terrace last Friday night, the driver told him he was unable to take him – and the man attacked him through the passenger window. Andrzej managed to press the assistance button, which alerted police and other drivers.

Fellow taxi driver Ralph Gunner received the call and went to the scene, but as he tried to help Andrzej, he was bitten on the arm by the man.

Ralph said: "As private hire drivers we would lose our jobs if we accepted a walk-on fare.

"People should know that private hire taxis can't pick people up without being booked.

"But we have to feel safe to do the job. The intercom system is good because it alerts other drivers, but there should be more measures for our protection."

A recently formed Taxi Association group is calling for quicker response from the police.

Association spokesperson Gareth Morgan said: "It was a scary attack. To be bitten by someone is horrendous, and you don't know what sort of diseases can be picked up."

An 18-year-old man has pleaded guilty to assault and will appear at Crown Court for sentencing on January 8.

Jail for Barry teenager who bit taxi driver

A TEENAGER who kicked and bit a taxi driver for refusing him a ride, and threatened to rape the police officers who arrested him, was jailed at Cardiff Crown Court last week.

Eighteen-year-old Jacob Phillips tried to get into the taxi in Lauden Terrace after a booze-fuelled night out on Friday, December 11.

When the driver, Andrzej Szymanowicz, refused, Phillips lent in through the window and attacked him.

Prosecuting Phillips, Richard Evans said: "The driver was aware that the defendant was intoxicated and refused the fare.

"That resulted in the defendant shouting ‘why won’t you give me a lift’ and punching him to his head and biting him on his forearm, puncturing the skin."

Mr Szymanowicz put out a distress call to other drivers including Ralph Gunner (pictured) - but when they attended, Phillips attacked them too.

Mr Evans told the court: "Three drivers attended and there was a struggle, through the course of which three of the drivers were spat at and kicked."

The defendant was overpowered but although he was being restrained, he was pouring out a torrent of (racist) abuse."

When police officers arrived at the scene Phillips threatened to rape and kill them, and was aggressive in the van to the cells, the court heard.

Police interviewing him the following morning reported that he cried a lot while saying that he was ‘more drunk than he had ever been before’.

Phillips pleaded guilty to ABH, common assault, using threatening words and behaviour, obstructing a police officer and of using racially aggravated language.

The court heard that Phillips had been the subject of several community orders, two action plan orders, a rehabilitation order with a curfew with a tag, but that he had persisted in his offending.

Sentencing Phillips, Judge Neil Bidder, said: "You have the pathetic tendency to regard alcohol as a remote third party responsible for your actions.

"Your behaviour is deeply obnoxious and contemptible – you spat and kicked at a man who was trying to do his job.

"Police officers and taxi drivers should not have to put up with behaviour like this. You are a nuisance.

"The public would be properly outraged if you did not face immediate custody."

Phillips was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment, including three months for breaching the community order he was issued in September for the possession of drugs and for obstructing an officer.

Some 33 days spent in custody on remand will count as time served.

A to B taxi manager, Anne Hayshan, welcomed the sentence.

She said: "We are pleased that justice has been done.

"As a company we are concerned when attacks like this happen.

"It's a job that leaves drivers isolated and vulnerable and they can be subjected to verbal abuse.

"Where once you would have people running away from the taxi, now we have them attacking drivers," she added.

"Sometimes it doesn't go to court so we are very pleased that this case has gone forward and the person responsible has gone to prison."

It seems to me that more and more ethnic drivers are getting attacked?
Or does it just seem that way..... Or is it more "news worthy"?
Saying that, quite often I get punters of all ages (across the social spectrum) getting in to my cab when I am way back in the queue saying they don't want to get in the cabs in front..... I ask why and the reply is nearly always similar or the same.
I can't repeat what is said sometimes, but what makes me cringe is the way they say they're not racist, but would prefer to go with an English driver.... They are not drunk or aggressive just adamant that they will not use those drivers.....
Reasons: Have been overcharged, taken for a ride, unsociable, can't understand English, cab smells of stale odour and all sorts of horror stories, including molestation of a sexual nature.
Have heard through the grapevine that 99% complaints made about drivers in our area and have been suspended (and returned), have been of ethnic minority drivers.....
How many of you have had this happen to them so often that it's now got to the point that it's no use in arguing the rights and wrongs, so now drive off with the punters on board without batting an eyelid?

More than likely, as there are more and more pi** heads out there looking for an easy target to have a pop at, and if the attack can doubled up to be a racist one then they think they have won the pools.

TBH many white drivers don't help by indirectly encouraging the scum.

This isn't coming from the the Fri/Saturday night chav element.... I'm talking about mature middle class professional types....

Even had a mature business type Asian gentleman do the exact same and told me that he doesn't trust empis so took me....
I asked him what an "empi" was....
Something like scum and not to be trusted. They tend to favour the taxi trade as it's mostly cash so they can avoid income tax and claim benefits....
That could be said about some English people/taxi drivers to.....
Nah! Asian empi's are just more devious and use/abuse the system better, it's all about how you use names..... :-o :-o  why do you think they prefer to work nights?
Why did you take me?
Took you before and you didn't overcharge me..... :)
