Extra time for taxi review

CABINET members will be asked for more time to allow a review of the way taxis are regulated.

Durham County Council's cabinet committee will be asked for extra time for a full and thorough consultation to continue before the authority sets a new policy.

The council launched a widespread consultation on the way taxis operate after it became a new unitary authority on April 1 last year.

While councillors are being asked to delay decisions on the overall policy, it is expected changes like safety improvements, additional driver checks, tinted windows, fire safety and first aid equipment will be brought in immediately.

Joanne Waller, the council's head of environment, health and consumer protection, said: "We are currently, and wish to continue, seeking the views of everyone involved in this important industry in the county so that any changes made result in a quality service that residents and visitors can rely on, and that is fair for traders.

"We have very much hope to get full involvement from all areas and this is why we are asking for additional time.

"This is a complex and sensitive issue and we must consider all feedback and allow that to help shape our new policy."

The results of the consultation process will be used to help shape the new policy later this year.
