Violent behaviour gets in the way of St Albans man's taxi licence appeal

A TAXI drivers whose licence was revoked following a spate of violent, rude and abusive behaviour towards customers has failed in his bid to get his job back.

Between April 2006 and December 2009 complaints flooded in to the senior licensing officer at St Albans District Council about the erratic behaviour of Tufayel Mohammed when driving his hackney carriage vehicle in St Albans.

This included using a metal tyre lever from his vehicle in a threatening manner during a dispute with passengers, failing to assist an elderly passenger, attempts to overcharge passengers due to the snow, use of rude and abusive language and failure to use his meter.

Mr Mohammed, of Butterfield Road, was given the opportunity to respond to the complaints and give his version of events. He also received a number of warnings prior to his licence being taken off him. Following this Mr Mohammed's licence was revoked on December 22, last year.

The district council has successfully defended an appeal lodged by Mr Mohammed as the magistrates agreed with the licensing officer Karen Holland that his evidence was not credible and they did not consider him to be a fit and proper person to hold a hackney carriage licence.

We had numerous complaints about one of our owner/drivers but when we said to the complainant "Please report him to the council" They backed off. We kept a log of the complaints and kicked him out but he's still driving and upsetting the public.

Most that do complain when the driver happens to be of ethnic minority have trouble proving their side, as it's seen more often than not as having a racist slant, unless there are witnesses that can declare otherwise..... We have had the same problem here..... but I personally think the tide is turning against the racist card being played all too often..... :-|
