Carlisle taxi driver racially abused by customer

Friday, 09 April 2010

A Carlisle man has been fined for racially abusing a Turkish taxi driver in a row over change.

William Robert Warwick, 60, of York Gardens in Upperby, got in the taxi in Carlisle city centre, on March 23, and asked the driver to take him home.

Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard that Warwick agreed to pay the fare of £3.50 and handed the taxi driver a £5 note but he said he became unhappy when he was given his £1.50 in loose change.

Prosecutor Pam Ward said then shouted racist abuse at the driver.

She said: “He [Warwick] was told to get out but didn’t and the taxi driver drove him to the police station.”

Defence solicitor Malcolm Dodds said that Warwick was not a racist man adding that he has an Asian girlfriend whom he has been in a relationship with for eight years. The defendant claims he was given his change in five pence pieces but this is disputed by the taxi driver.

Magistrates fined Warwick, who pleaded guilty, £200 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

I remember many years ago in my student days boarding a bus and tried to pay the driver the exact money with all the loose change in my pocket he refused to accept it and insisted i give him a note he then paid the change all in 5p 2p and 1p coins !

it was VERY ANNOYING so I can understand the row breaking out however there is no excuse for racial abuse

Some many years ago I had someone hand me a £50 note for a £2.50 fare hoping I wouldn't have the float to change it as he was grinning all over his face when handing it to me.... Naturally I asked if he had anything smaller which he said he didn't.....
I made him wait while I counted out all my excess spare silver, coppers and all the coins I could spare, all my £5 pound notes and the smallest denomination I could get away with....
He looked quite pished off when I handed it to him and dropped the lot while he held out his hands..... Needless to say he must have been there some time picking up all the coins that rolled away, while I just thanked him, bid him a nice day and drove off!!
