Call for taxi spaces to be opened to public parking A CALL has been made for taxi bays in Ulverston’s main shopping street to be officially made available to shoppers. The three Hackney carriage spaces outside Tesco Express in Market Street are currently reserved for taxis 24 hours-a-day, except on Thursdays and Saturdays, when market-holders are entitled to the spaces until 8pm. That arrangement could change from around August, when Tesco Express hopes to use some of the area for loading between 6am and 10am, except on market days. Now councillors in Ulverston are asking for the bays to be allocated for public parking between 10am and 6pm on non-market days – because taxis rarely use the bays during those hours. Shoppers already appear to park in the spaces – at 10.30am yesterday, all three were occupied by ordinary cars – but councillors have written to Cumbria County Council for an official revision of the rules. Councillor Janette Jenkinson told Monday’s Ulverston Town Council meeting: “In the morning, the taxis are probably not used as much as they are later on in the day. “I would like to see the spaces used in the daytime by members of the public. “I know it’s a bit of a flexible situation already, and people do park there at times, but it would be sensible to have them for the public use between 10am and 6pm.” Allan Rodgers, owner of Ulverston-based LA12 Taxis, told the Evening Mail he would not be opposed to the council’s proposal. He said hackney taxis use the bays in Cross Street during the day, but said drivers often struggle to park in the Market Street bays in the evening – when they need them – because they are still occupied by shoppers. Mr Rodgers said: “We didn’t really need the 24-hour provision (introduced by South Lakeland District Council in 2007). “We use the Cross Street ones through the day, so as long as we can use the Market Street one after 6pm, that’s all right. “But the Market Street one is invisible anyway. There’s no sign to say it’s for taxis, and the yellow markings on the road have faded away. “People have no way of knowing it’s for taxis so you can’t blame them for parking there, but it can be a fight to use it at night. “The Cross Street one gets used by people as well There is very little enforcement of taxi rank parking in Ulverston.” A county council spokesman said Ulverston Town Council’s proposal will be considered after April 30 – the same deadline for public comments on the Tesco loading hours. http://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/ulverston/ |
