Bogus taxi driver jailed for sex attack Hassan's name has been placed on the sex offenders register, the court heard A man who admitted carrying out a sex attack after being mistaken for a taxi driver has been jailed for five years. Manzoor Hassan, 34, from Edinburgh's Tollcross area, was initially accused of attempted rape but pleaded guilty to abduction and indecent assault. The attack happened in February 2009 when the 20-year-old female student mistook the car for a taxi near Edinburgh's South Bridge. The judge said the sentence would not be reduced for pleading guilty. Judge Lady Smith said the victim had already travelled to give evidence before the plea. The judge was shown CCTV footage of the victim heading away from a nightclub in Market Street, apparently drunk and trying to look at a map. She had become separated from her classmates from Dublin University, who were enjoying a weekend in the city. What she needed was a licensed taxi to uplift her and take her safely back to the hostel where she was staying Judge Lady Smith At the High Court in Edinburgh, Lady Smith told Hassan he had taken advantage of a vulnerable young woman who was a stranger to the city. Advocate depute Derek Ogg QC, prosecuting, said the student was trying to hail a taxi in the early hours of 1 February last year. She made her way to South Bridge and got into the back of Hassan's car. Instead of correcting her mistake, Hassan began to drive around and took her to the Longstone area of the city. The court heard he got into the back of the car at a former B&Q store in Inglis Green Road and subjected the 20-year-old to a violent indecent assault. Mr Ogg said after a struggle the 20-year-old fled barefoot, leaving her underwear and other possessions in Hassan's car, and was able to make it to a nearby house for help. Solicitor advocate Jim Keegan QC, defending, said Hassan was shocked and shamed by his behaviour. 'Smoking cannabis' "He fully accepts that what he did was wrong," he said. "He has been smoking cannabis for a long time but he maintains that what he did that night was out of character." Passing sentence, Lady Smith said the CCTV footage as the student left the nightclub showed her to be "extremely vulnerable". The judge said: "What she needed was a licensed taxi to uplift her and take her safely back to the hostel where she was staying. "What she did not need was the nightmare experience which followed, an experience for which you were entirely responsible." The judge made an order extending Hassan's licence conditions by three years and put his name on the sex offenders register. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edi ... 631990.stm |

I think he didn't blame the trade directly, more indirectly because they didn't have enough cabs to meet the demand. Also, I believe, the cab trade share some of the blame by refusing to support proper PH signage.

The council can not claim to be protecting public safety, as they are charged to do, unless and until it has done everything in its power to provide a proper and adequate taxi service. Restricting taxi numbers, to protect the council's own, and the taxi trade owner's, vested interests falls well below this imperative benchmark. Remember, this council has just denied 92 guys who want to provide a service the licence to do so, and are fighting their appeals through the very courts that are telling them here that supply is so poor that vulnerable females are having difficulty hailing a cab. This female needed a licensed taxi, and tried to hail one. This is what Lady Smith said. Her chances of getting one were reduced by Clllr Colin Keir's policy to restrict. While the barons on the council are sitting back in their armchairs chuckling that they are fighting off the common sense de-restriction of the taxi trade, this girl was being subjected to an awful ordeal. Were it Cllr Keir's daughter? Whether these crimes could be avoided with de-restriction is subject to debate. But a fair supply of taxis could have prevented this female's ordeal. The price for owners protecting their vested interest, their false plate value and the high rental income is the scars that this young female has to bear. It wasn't her fault that she couldn't hail a taxi. It is the trade's. And Colin Keir's for not having the political sense to put public safety before all else. What do we have to do? Wait for the next case? Perhaps even a murder next time? Is that what it will take for common sense to prevail? Were I this girl my lawyers would be preparing legal suit against the council at this very moment. That would bring at least some justice for her.

You're one poor individual prepared to allow wee lassies to be sexually assaulted, raped, even murdered, just so you're vested interest is secure. Dearie me. How do you sleep at night. What does your wife say? I bet you wouldn't even dare to ask her. |

| Post subject: | Why read anything by Jimbob |
I too have more to do with life than read Jimbob's ravings. My view on this is why is always someone else's responsibility? What happened to the notion of personal responsibility? This girl's friends allowed her to become detached from the rest of the group - isn't it their responsibility? Yet I'm sure Jimbob will be claiming it's all the "corrupt council and taxi trade", no one is out shouting it's all the fault of her friends or the nightclub who sold her so much alcohol that she ended up in a situation no one would ever want to find themselves. Even if anyone had been passing and available, are there that many drivers who would have picked her up in that state? The public have to take responsibility for their own safety, and stop looking for others to blame. TC |

Imagine another female being murdered because CC and his ilk were too bored to do something to discourage the attacks. How is your wife? |

How is your wife? You really are a complete f*ckwit arent you Jimbob. You blamed from memory this entire incident on a lack of taxis, presumably thats why the young lady got into a vehicle she thought was a licensed PHV. Because you thought it would further your cause, which was a differing cause a few years back. You jump on every incident to bite the hand of the trade that feeds you, and you use large words to make people think your more intelligent than you actually are. Now f*ck off to the hole you crawled out of, you pathetic, sad, little man. My wife is fine, your's is probably demented
