Iconic black cabs could get fuel economy boost

Received 23rd April 2010

Buckingham-based technicians believe they could make London’s iconic black cabs both more powerful and more fuel efficient.

The Superchips company took the most recent version of the taxi cab, the LT1 TX4, which is powered by a 2.5litre, four cylinder turbo diesel engine, and aimed to boost both its driveability and economy. They analysed the vehicle’s Bosch EDC16 ECU and found several optimisation opportunities that enabled the company to fine tune the map settings to remove any inbuilt compromises while also boosting performance.

With their remap, the LT1 TX4 saw its torque vastly lifted from a measured 265Nm at 2,622rpm to a maximum of 339Nm at 2,352rpm. Power gains were also impressive with the car producing a measured 103bhp at 3,059rpm previously but with the Superchips remap it leapt to 3,479rpm.

Of particular interest to green car fans however, is that not only did the Superchips upgrade boost the performance of the vehicle but it also helped its fuel economy with fuel consumption gains in the order of 10 per cent.

Superchips is now offering the upgrade in a matter of minutes at its dealerships in the UK priced at £445. The conversion comes with a full customer service guarantee and a warranty.

How many miles would you have to drive to recover the £445 outlay?

Is an extra 10% on an already pi** poor mpg ratio something to shout about? :?

If the claims are achievable, then yes, it is something to shout about.

My brother who lives in your neck of the woods, spends £200-£250 on derv each week, so if true, £20+ pw saving.

He'd have his money back within 6 months.

I meant on the vehicle as a whole, not with the add on product.

In other words should we all be shouting that a vehicle does 22mpg rather than 20mpg.

Shouldn't we be saying any vehicle that does less than 35mpg isn't one that we should be driving in the first place.

well, if you dont tell em...

its not an obvious modification and would require a diagnostic to read what firmware was installed on the ECU/PCM

you can tune for power (BHP) or economy (Torque), the external "boxes" are not well thought of generally.

a remap is basically tuning the ECU/PCM to your vehicle, whereas a bog standard unit is "one size fits all"

Had mine done a few years ago, took it from 130BHP to 145BHP. Made quite a bit of difference.

mines gonna go in for a diesel service (injectors/recode,etc) at a delphi agent and then for a belt and tensioner/bottom pulley and service, if its hunk dory then it will get a remap and decat, cant see the mpg improving much tho

ill buy a skoda superb/VW passat next, or a saab TDi
