Beijing to have 500 electric taxi cabs this year

Saturday, April 24, 2010

BEIJING, Apr. 25, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- The Chinese capital will have 500 electric taxi cabs in service by the end of this year, Beiqi Foton Motor Co. Ltd., the manufacturer, announced Saturday.

The electric Midi model can run 200 kilometers (125 miles in English) after being fully charged, Zhao Jingguang, a senior executive of the Beijing-based company, said at the 2010 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2010).

The new-energy cars would account for 30 percent of the company's total output in future, Zhao said, without giving a timetable.

Beiqi Foton became China's largest commercial vehicle producer in terms of sales last year.

The company sold 588,500 commercial vehicles in 2009, up 44.97 percent from a year earlier, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

The Auto China 2010, held every other year, has 2,100 automotive manufacturers from 16 countries and regions participating. It runs from April 23 to May 2.

FFS!!...I must've been driving in Scottish McMiles for all these years in the misunderstanding that it was an imperial measurement of distance...

if you have enough charge to get there and theres a charger service at the airport, yes

i forsee something like a tram sysyem at ranks and airports, etc, with electrical pickups under the vehicle to charge while they wait, just drive straight on, maybe with a moving system to move forward when one pulls off

of ourse the could fit an economical generator in the boot running at about 1ltr an hour to help...

Too long, which is why electric cabs wont happen until they can guarantee at least 200 miles a charge.

More like 400 miles...its no good if you are left high and dry midway through your third decent run of the day....how much of a scunner would that, a chance to have a decent day curtailed because the battery in your Chinese Built " 50watt Hnog-Knog Vibrator MkII" Taxi leaves shafted at the last hill from home..

No..sorry, not for me Im afraid... [-(

it will be a long time before a fully electric vehicle is on a par with my 600 miles per tankfull and numerous refill points, but i suppose it will come, till then a hybrid seems the best bet

Depends if you have a solar panel charger on the roof.

You might not need a charge to get back if you have one of those fitted.

:D :D :D

lets face it, the oil companies dont want us all running leccy cars, but they dont fund develepment of the internal combustion engine to get taxi's/saloons upto 100mpg do they, nor do the car/engine companies

i was getting 50mpg out of a maestro Tdi and montego tdi estates 20 years ago, slower and smokier than many today i agree but they only had what, 75bhp? my mondeo has 130, great, but no more mpg

i only do extra urban runs, 850 miles a week, i need a 5 seater saloon, 100mpg would be great, instead ive got 6 gears (cant use 6th till i hit 65) and lots of newton metre thingies, great, but only 49mpg...
