Amber cars drivers send clear signal

Issue: 2225 dated: 30 October 2010 News & Reports
posted: 5.31pm Tue 26 Oct 2010

Two hundred and fifty drivers at the Amber Car firm in Leeds last week refused to work after a £10 a week increase in rental charges.

The firm unilaterally increased rental charges for radio equipment for licensed private hire car drivers working for it, who are self-employed.

The drivers, who are mainly of Asian origin, were refusing to work unless Amber Cars agreed to negotiate on this and a number of other matters.

Action began on 15 October when the company imposed the increases, and it ended late on Friday of last week.

Amber Cars is the largest private hire company in Leeds.

Drivers say that the company informed them that their contracts would be terminated if they refused to return to work. The GMB union is attempting to represent the drivers in the dispute.

Bill Chard, the membership development officer for the GMB, said, “The drivers told me that many of them worked below the minimum wage.

“They also stated that they felt that they were not treated with respect.”

While the drivers have now gone back to work, they are taking each Monday off until they get a decent resolution.

The drivers will also gather after Friday prayers to discuss the next stage.

More than 160 taxi drivers in Rossendale, Lancashire, protested on Wednesday of last week against council plans to introduce a penalty points system.
