Council considers scrapping Watford's black and white taxi colours

12:02pm Friday 2nd July 2010

Councillors will meet on Monday to decide whether or not to do away with Watford’s familiar black and white taxi colour scheme.

Watford Borough Council’s Licensing Committee will debate the removal of a condition demanding that new and existing Hackney Carriage be painted white with a black boot and bonnet.

Some councillors and drivers have argued that the colour scheme, designed to make the vehicles instantly recognisable to the public, is prohibitively expensive – adding to the cost of buying and repairing a vehicle.

A decision will be made on Monday night.

What do you think? Would you be happy to see the back of our black and white taxis? Let us know by commenting below.

The costs of a white car are sometimes up to £400 extra, and then you will need to paint the black bits. So an extra bill of £600-£800 is not uncommon.

Also the availability of white is a nightmare. Fella I know has been quoted end of September for a white Eurobus.

black/white

THE worst colours to keep clean

white is the worst for resale prices cos they all look like ex-police cars

Yes they do...but leave a Hig Viz yellow jacket on the dashboard and the car in front suddenly becomes much more easy to overtake

Why paint them when you can get them vinyl wrapped for a fraction of the cost

I remember back in 1992, Natphelo (licensing officers) as they were known then issued a report saying every PH car in the COUNTRY should be the same colour. They suggested yellow with both front doors painted white. It would be tricky trying to get one of those in the Auctions.

In theory Skippy that is a fair option. However unless you have had the whole car wrapped when you come to sell the car and you remove the wrapping, the paintwork under the wrapping will be like it was when it came out of the showroom and the exposed paintwork will be faded because of the weather over the years. So the car will need to be painted to make it look right.

IMO every council should have a colour code wether it be black or white, white and blue etc etc. If you look hard enough there's enough white coloured cars out there.

I think its ironic that the paint job will cost more than the price of the vehicle
