Unlicensed taxi crackdown in city

Police in Cardiff have stopped 34 vehicles in the last two weekends in a crackdown on unlicensed taxis, minibuses and limousines.

South Wales Police mounted the operation over what they said were concerns about unlicensed vehicles in the city centre.

Police said one limousine and a minibus were found to be operating without a licence while a private hire vehicle was reported for illegally picking up passengers.

Action was also taken against several drivers who had defective vehicles.

Chief Inspector Jay Dave said: "This operation was launched as a result of issues raised by the taxi drivers themselves. They don't want rogue or unsafe drivers in the city any more than we do."
