HUNT FOR BOGUS TAXI DRIVER SEX ATTACKER

A SEX predator who indecently assaulted two Flintshire women during a bogus taxi ride could strike again, police are warning.

The warning comes after two friends, both 42, were subjected to a serious sexual assault at the hands of a man posing as a taxi driver in Chester city centre.
“This man represents a real danger to lone women and a serious incident of this nature could happen again,” said Det Con Mal Walsh, of Chester CID.
The man, who police are keen to stress does not hold a taxi licence or is in any way associated with taxi drivers in Chester, collected his two victims, who had been in the city for a night out, from a taxi rank in George Street, close to the Delamere Street bus station.
Cheshire Constabulary spokesman, Jon Ratcliffe, said: “The two women were walking on George Street at 2.30am on Sunday when they were approached by a man purporting to be a taxi driver.
“The women got in to the car and began their journey but became suspicious when the driver began to take a different route.”
Mr Ratcliffe said the driver drove down a lane in Sealand before indecently assaulting both women who, after a struggle, managed to break free and escape.
The offender is in his late 30s with short mousy brown hair with three quarter length side burns. His victims say he claimed to be Portuguese.
The offender was driving a dark blue G-registration two-door car, which contained a baby seat, and had a triangle-shaped sticker in the window containing foreign words.
DC Walsh says police are now scanning CCTV footage.
He said: “This is a most serious offence involving two women who were targeted after they let their guard down initially and got in to the car.
“When they realised the situation, they managed to force the driver to stop the car and escaped.
“The sooner we get hold of this offender the better. It is a possibility an offence of this nature could happen again as we know this offender’s aim was clearly not for financial gain as a taxi driver. He soon made his intentions clear.
“We ask that women be extra vigilant and ensure taxis are properly licensed and carry an official badge. If this is not the case, alert police to this.
“In the meantime we call upon taxi drivers to keep a lookout in the event they may be able to help with information
“This does not reflect favourably on taxi drivers in Chester who are going about their jobs lawfully and providing a safe service for the public.”
Licensing officer, Phil Dickerty, said: “In the light of this, enforcement patrols will be stepped up. The licensing department is committed to maintaining safety levels and licensing checks on Chester’s 600-plus taxi drivers.
“I would like to say that as licensing officers, the taxi drivers that serve this city are held with high regard and it is unfortunate this incident may reflect on them despite the fact this particular incidents has nothing to do or is in no way associated with Chester taxi drivers.
“Fortunately, Chester does not have a big problem with taxi drivers and that is down to the careful maintenance of enforcement operations.
“We are 100 per cent behind police in doing whatever we can to bring this offender to justice and ensure incidents of this nature are not repeated.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact DS Pete Blackburn or DC Mal Walsh on 01244 613133 or Crimestoppers confidentially on 0800 555 111.
