City worker charged in taxi-license bribery

CHICAGO -- Authorities charged a city worker Wednesday with four counts of bribery and one count of official misconduct.

The Cook County state's attorney's office filed charges against Anthony Perkins of the 8400 block of South Kolin Avenue one day after city officials arrested him at the Consumer Services Department facility where he has worked for the last year.

The city's inspector general, Alexander Vroustouris, accused Perkins of accepting six bribes, ranging from $50 to $1,000, from cabdrivers seeking city licenses.

Perkins, 47, allegedly received the bribes from applicants who were not qualified for licenses, including one person who had been convicted of drunken driving.

Perkins was being held at Cook County Jail on Wednesday. He is scheduled to appear in court at 1 p.m. Thursday.

City officials put Perkins, who has worked for the city since 1987, on paid administrative leave Wednesday.
