Mystery of South Ribble taxi firm

A taxi firm appears to have disappeared without a trace leaving disgruntled customers out of pocket. Leyland's Eco-Cabs opened in July 2009 boasting a fleet of environmentally-friendly cars. But the phone line has now been taken over by Premier Taxis, which is not connected to Eco-Cabs.

Denise Bibby, of Riversedge Road, Leyland, who works in the exams department at Runshaw College, booked a taxi to pick her up from Manchester Airport earlier this month after a holiday to Gibraltar.

She said: "Out flight was delayed so we were told the driver had gone. They said they sent someone else but they had broken down on the motorway. So they told us, just get another taxi, get a receipt and we will refund the money."

Denise forked out £85 to get home believing she would be reimbursed. But so far she has not been able to recoup the cash and can't get hold of anyone who is willing to pay her back despite visiting the firm's former base in Longton.

She added: "I've even been round to the drivers' houses. I've been phoning. There was no-one at the office. We have just had a nightmare with them." And it is believed many more customers were left stranded at the airport and out of pocket.

A spokesman for Premier Taxis said: "The phone number is now owned by Premier Taxis. We've taken over all their jobs. We took the phones over on Monday."

Dean Chapman set the company up to create a low-cost, reliable taxi service. Mr Chapman could not be contacted and the firm's website has been disabled.

A transgender driver's return behind the wheel of a taxi lasted just a month.
Andre Edwards, 51, walked out of her job at Leyland-based Eco Cabs following a series of rows with her new bosses – and they don't want her back.

The move comes less than a month after the Guardian revealed how the company, based on Mellor Road, had given her a chance to work two months after she was sacked from Leyland Taxis.

Earlier this month, Eco Cabs' managing director Dean Chapman praised Andre as an "exceptionally brave person who is an extremely well-qualified driver".

But last week, after Andre quit, Mr Chapman said: "I gave her a decent, honest chance – I did really try to look out for her and Andre was getting a fair crack of the whip.

"As far as I'm concerned she's quit – there's been no explanation, no calls and no text messages.

"There's no way I would be taking her back."

Andre, who is set to undergo a full sex change operation in the next two or three years, said she quit after raising concerns over how the business was being run.

She admitted she had not been paying her full 'taxi rent' of around £240-a-week as she was not being given enough jobs to pay the fee – a claim denied by the taxi firm.

She said: "I tried to make it work and stick with them, but there was no work. Dean seems to think I'm going to be running back with my tail between my legs. I am bitterly disappointed."

Andre said she is continuing to attend clinical appointments for a sex-change operation.

Born Andrew, she has previously spoken of how she knew she was not like other children when she was just 10-years-old.

She claimed to have been sacked from Leyland Taxis for wearing a skirt and nail polish, although bosses there said it was due to colleagues and customers complaining about her 'bad attitude'.

Aye...and ahm pleased I didnt have to share the same School changing room cubicle with him , her or It... just to appease the PC brigade on their quest for Diversity and Equality...Jesus...us straight folks have rights too...Havent we ????

If theyre not like Other kids then they shouldnt be beside other kids...as other kids might find the trauma to much...but as always..majority caves in to minority...

No confusion here toots....I would not be happy in sharing a communal changing room with a big hairy bloke wearing a bra and sporting open crotch knickers or with a clean shaven long haired brunette sporting an all beef thermometer...they maybe confused but I aint and nor should I have that type of embarassing situation put on me.

If they want to bend their gender to suit thats up to them completley....But please let them keep to themselves, ...just how awkward would it be for a woman in a public loo to be confronted by a big hairy brute of a man who has just ten minutes before decided that he is really a woman and has opted for diversity rights to use the ladies toilets as part of his/hers journey towards transgender heaven.

If they want equality then they should keep these things to themselves and not expect more rights more than the normally gendered receive...they might endure an inner conflict of being born the wrong physical gender to their that of their emotional one.

Its just common sense that if you want to mix it with everyone then its better to go about your daily lives in the same way as everyone else and not stand out, you can be different but just dont crow about it.

Certainly by making a major issue of their plight they just seek publicity and will forever put themselves in position of a ridicule.

It is not for us to conform to suit them..it should for them to blend in with mininum fuss and Hoo Hah with the rest of society..

Besides no amount of government interference in telling people what to think about such issues will make any differance simply because a million years of evolution in mankinds mental development will not be diluted by a simple government diktat....the natural world is more powerful than parliament.
