Hammer gang rob £50k from taxi firm owned by wife of Tam 'The Licensee' McGraw

Jul 31 2010

Masked bandits robbed £50,000 from a taxi firm owned by the widow of gangster Tam McGraw yesterday.

The hammer-wielding gang attacked a car taking Glasgow Private Hire's cash to the bank. They smashed the windows, grabbed money bags from two terrified employees then fled in a waiting motor.

The cab firm were once owned by the late crime boss McGraw - known as The Licensee - and are still 40 per cent owned by his widow Margaret, 58.

Last night, a source close to the firm said: "The two guys were really shook up. Three blokes jumped out of a car, carrying hammers.

"They were all wearing balaclavas and began setting about the car, smashing all the windows. They grabbed a number of bags and made off."

The raid happened after the car left the firm's headquarters in Edinburgh Road, Glasgow, with the cash box just before 4pm.

The pair had stopped off at the Post Office in Carntynehall Road in the city's east end to collect tax disc application forms.

The company were known as Mac Cars when owned by McGraw. The name changed when they were partly bought over by millionaire Stevie Malcolm, now managing director. Last night, he offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the robbers.

He told the Record: "I am really angry that my staff had to endure such a terrifying ordeal. These were two people who were just going about their work. Yet they find themselves in a situation that no one should have to face.

"A reward is the very least I can do to make sure that people who work for me are not subjected to such violence."

Detective Sergeant David Scott said inquiries were continuing and appealed for witnesses.

Taxi boss offers £10,000 reward after daring Glasgow robbery
Two staff reportedly carrying more than £50,000 were robbed as they took the cash to a bank in Glasgow's east end

30 July 2010

A taxi boss is offering a £10,000 reward after robbers wielding hammers reportedly escaped with more than £50,000 in a daring raid in Glasgow.

Three masked men attacked a vehicle in the east end which was carrying cash to a bank in the city centre.

The raid happened on Friday at the end of the Glasgow Fair Holiday when taxi companies throughout the city were banking their takings.

A car carrying two employees of Glasgow Private Hire Ltd had left the firm¹s headquarters in Edinburgh Road, Carntyne, with the Friday cash box just before 4pm.

Their intended destination was a bank in Glasgow's city centre but the pair stopped off at the Post Office in Carntynehall Road to collect tax disc application forms.

According to reports the masked men jumped out of a car carrying hammers and begin smashing the window of the vehicle, grabbing a number of bags.

One 43-year-old man was in the car at the time and has been left slightly injured and shaken by the ordeal.

The men then made off at high speed in a grey coloured car heading east on Edinburgh Road in the direction of Baillieston.

On Friday night the taxi company¹s managing director, Stevie Malcolm, 46, announced a £10,000 reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of the robbers.

He said: "I am really angry that my staff had to endure such a terrifying ordeal. These were two people who were just going about their work. Yet they find themselves in a situation that no-one should have to face.

"I am posting a £10,000 reward for information which will lead to these people being apprehended and convicted for what they have done.

"It is the very least I can do to make sure that people who work for me are not subjected to such violence."

The first suspect is described as a white male, about 5ft 8ins, slim build, wearing a black ski mask, dark bomber jacket, dark blue denims and white trainers. The other suspects were also wearing black ski masks and dark clothing.

Detective Sergeant David Scott, of London Road Police Office, is appealing for information.

He said: "Enquiries are ongoing to trace the men responsible for this robbery and the car they made off in. Officers are currently checking CCTV and carrying out door to door enquiries in the area in an effort to gather more information."

"Edinburgh Road would have been busy at the time of the incident and I believe someone would have seen something that maybe vital to our enquiry.

"As such I would appeal to anyone who saw anything or who has any information that may assist our enquires to contact London Police Office on 0141 532 4600. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained."

£50k taxi raid was 'inside job'
POLICE CLAIM THAT MASKED THUGS 'KNEW TOO MUCH'

01/08/2010

Cops hunting masked thugs who robbed £50,000 from a taxi firm are probing claims it was an "inside job".

A hammer-wielding gang followed two Glasgow Private Hire workers as they headed to a bank on Friday afternoon.

They smashed their car's windows before grabbing money bags and fleeing.

The three raiders struck in Glasgow's east end, near the company's HQ.

Last night a police source said: "Clearly someone knew that the money would be getting banked. They also knew what the cashbox looked like and the car to be used. It all points to someone close to the firm."

Glasgow Private Hire's MD Stevie Malcolm has offered a £10,000 reward for information. His silent business partner is Margaret McGraw, widow of crime boss Tam 'The Licensee' McGraw.

Last night Mr Malcolm said: "If I have to, I will bring in private security to protect my staff."

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "Inquiries are ongoing."

I think swimming with the fishes is a bit more like it. I can't see their legs ever covering this debt. :-|
