A decision on a proposal that would have seen fares rise by an average of between 6% and 8% was delayed by the city council's licensing committee yesterday pending further talks with the trade.

The Dundee Taxi Association (DTA) and the Unite trade union put forward a joint proposal for a fares increase, which they said was needed to cover rising operating costs.

It would have resulted in fares going up by an average of just over 6% to just under 8% depending on the journey and the day and time it is made.

DTA chairman Graeme Stephen told the committee there had been increases in a range of costs including fuel, insurance, servicing and parts since the last increase two years ago.

He said the increase asked for was "slightly higher" than normal but said that was because there had been none last year.

Chris Elder, of Unite, said he feared rejection would result in the standard of Dundee's taxi fleet declining because of the costs involved in buying and maintaining vehicles.
