As if trade isn't bad enough for the city's 406 (at last count) hackney cabs a private hire firm has been given permission by Derby City Council to have touts patrol the city wearing flourescent yellow jackets with the words "For affordable cars book here". Customers are given a receipt for a fixed price journey which they present to the driver. No meters are used. Is this system used elsewhere? http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/news/ ... ticle.html |

Like other parts of the country the lo is taking the [edited by admin] like Dundee they are not taken the taxi trade into consideration when redeveloping.I think they forget that they are causing the problem with the number of licences they grant as for the touting i think it is illegal.
as for the councilor who said Quote: "I am outraged by the action and I do not think it is justified. I will be talking to the taxi association and I would not be surprised if the licensing department takes action against those involved." there should be a campaign to have him ousted at the next election ,i am sure he would change his tune then the numpty.

I have just read the comments from the first newspaper story and it would seem that this way of taking bookings has been approved by the council??? |

http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/news/ ... ticle.html And that's the way to do it! EXCEPT the cabbies are NOT on a 'GO SLOW', they are PLYING FOR HIRE as their licence & the law allows them to do!! And that must be made plain to the newspapers & the media!! I just wish the cab trade in the provinces would do it to a man on one specific day, at one specific time, throughout the country!! Make it a national issue for the newspapers & media!! |

Then the council are guilty of aiding & abetting the criminal act of TOUTING!! |

Is this not a little similar to the booking agents allowed to operate around London nightspots ? I think the trade needs to get a legal definition of what amounts to touting and present it to Derby city council and the police |

Is this system used elsewhere? http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/news/ ... ticle.html Check taxi-drivers archives and you'll find an article about 6o cars in Hull. The system is legal. I blame the council for giving out toooooo many hackney licenses and allowing them to queue 30+ cars at the weekend and then have a minimum charge of £5.40. Are they mad, its bcoz of their attitude as quoted by their chairman 'WE RULE THE ROADS OF DERBY' and their attitude towards the public of derby with their go slow actions if they don't get what they want that i thought of giving the public the chance of making an informed choice. My 5 yr old kids try the same when they don't get what they want and it doesn't work for them. Yes I'm the same Harvey from the article and at present I've been approached by 4 yellow cab drivers wishing to work with my system. As I only charge commission from their earnings, any driver working for me will be happy with their take home from weekend trade!!

Have these Marshals been CRB checked then, as they would be dealing with vulnerable adults under the influence of alcohol. Have you also considered the implications with employment law and public liability insurance. If one of these staff of yours were attached and fatally wounded, would you end up on corporate manslaughter charges ? |

Harvey,I totally agree the council is to blame for handing out licences like confetti. However,I fail to see how your touting operation is legal. But hey,one wouldn't expect Derby City Council to mind would we,given the constant blind eye they turn to private hires flying in town. If you guys want to pick up from town then you should attain 70% on the knowledge test not the paltry 55% required to be a private hire.I know there are plenty that just can't make the grade. As for your claim of a £5.40 minimum fare at night? Must get my meter checked then cos mine starts at £2.50 after midnight,a whole 50p extra!! I have my reservations about the go slows,I was involved in the last one but knew nothing of this one.I feel alienating the public is not the right way and it certainly does our trade damage.Poor union leadership is another story altogether and all I will say is Derby Hackney drivers will never achieve anything until we have just one union.Alas there is too much bitching and fighting for that to happen. I'm not surprised yellow cab drivers are looking to come and join you.The trade is beyond dead in town.Luckily for me,I have found another avenue and don't need the ranks anymore. Regards Steve |

mmm legal or not legal? but i was under the impression that a PH drivers license conditions made it for him and his vehicle to be under the control of 1 yes 1 private hire company,i see that my "friend" on a private hire firm in derby is also doing work for the mobile touting firm, does this seem to constitute a breach of conditions both by the driver and by the firm giving him work?
