Parking row cabbie is locked up for 10 weeks

06 August 2010

A taxi driver who hit a woman with his cab during a road rage incident has been jailed for 10 weeks.

John Docherty, 57, hit Caroline Morrell with his taxi after she parked her car in a rank in George Street, Corby, on December 30.

Ms Morrell had been dropping off a friend, and her friend's 11-year-old son was in the car at the time of the incident.

Corby Magistrates' Court was told she had left her car after Docherty was abusive towards her. He drove into her, leaving her right leg bruised, before driving off.

Docherty, of Kirkwall, Corby, had denied assault at a previous hearing in March but was convicted after a trial.

Jailing him at Corby Magistrates' Court yesterday, chairman of the magistrates Jane Charlton-Jones told Docherty: "We are sending you to prison for a total period of 10 weeks.

"We think there is no other way of dealing with you."

"This was a serious offence, you are a taxi driver and you used your car as a weapon.

"Injury was caused and children were present."

Tim Akers, prosecuting, said Ms Morrell had been due to work leading a
class as a fitness instructor on the evening the incident took place, but had been unable to do so because of the bruising caused to her leg.

He said she had been unable to walk her dog for a week and she had not been back into Corby town centre since the incident in case she saw Docherty.

Michelle Fraiser, in mitigation for Docherty, said the married father-of-two had been under "a huge amount of pressure" at the time of the incident and he accepted that his behaviour had been very poor.

She said: "What happened on that day, appalling as it was, was just what it was – an isolated one-off incident, not something Mr Docherty would ever wish to repeat."

I do hope bob the bigot reads this as he is definitely a repeat offender when it comes to abusing the public parking on the rank !
