Just flew into Southampton this evening.

As you emerge from arrivals you have Checkers Cars booking desk in front of you.

Walk out the door and there is a line of Checker Cars PH vehicles queued up waiting for their bookings.

What I want to know is how Checker Cars and BAA get away with the booking desk having only one sign, and that sign only has one word on it. Taxis!

How can a PH firm trade under a sign saying Taxis?

At a guess....my gaff my rules and a local cab trade thats more interested in preserving their plate value than rocking any boat.

They are a taxi company aren't they? Haven't their cars got hackney plates?

They offer a taxi service from most of the U.K. airports, with the exception of Heathrow, where they are private hire, and are licensed by the PCO and Spelthorne.

I suspect it's because no-one in the local trade has complained officially.

Just to be pedantic isn't "Southampton airport" actually located at the neighbouring town of Eastleigh ?

I think the problem with airports is that they are private land and I would be surprised if the authorities could act on a complaint over signage within the airport itself

As far as I know Birmingham Luton and Heathrow are the only airports in England worked by Hackney plated vehicles the rest are PH firms who pay the owners vast sums of money for the rights to exclusively work the airport

I thought Manchester was another worked by franchise ? we never get asked to go as far as Liverpool or newcastle so I wouldn't know about those or the Scottish ones which is why I said England in the post !

Do not forget too that black taxis also pay the owner a (vast) sum of money each time they rank at Heathrow. They pay BAA approx £5.50, which is quite a chunk of the fare, as they have to wait about for a few hours.

Also at the information desk at each of Heathrow's terminals is a poster displayed with about a dozen or private hire adverts, where private hire firms also pay BAA to advertise on there.

The taxis at MCR airport use a barrier system.

We have been told on numerous occasions that "TAXI" is a generic word which is why the LA can do nothing about it.
