A taxi driver was hit in the face with a brick and another had his eyebrow “bitten off” in a vicious attack in Telford. Taxi bosses are warning some parts could become “no-go areas”.
The drivers, both in their 20s, were attacked at about 2am today in the Madeley area.
Mohammed Zaman, chairman of Telford Private Hire Drivers Association, said both had been treated for their injuries and discharged from hospital.
He added that a group of four or five people were believed to be behind the attack, which left one driver in a “pool of blood”.
Mr Zaman said the incident was “serious” and could force his members to avoid certain areas of town in future. He said: “We run a service for the public, but if we get abused what’s the next stage?
“If more drivers get attacked like this then some place will have to become no go areas. At the moment we feel like we’re sitting ducks.
“It’s very frightening and we feel like the police are going to wait for someone to get killed before anything is done to stop this behaviour.
“These yobs cannot be allowed to treat people like this.” He said one driver was going to a job near Hills Lane and on his arrival he was set upon and attacked with a brick.
The driver pressed his “panic button”, summoning more drivers to come to his aid. Mr Zaman said the second driver to arrive was attacked and had his eyebrow bitten off.
He added one of his members went to collect a fare in Woodside during the World Cup and was set upon by a group of people lying in wait.
Mr Zaman appealed for people with information about attacks on taxi drivers to call police.
Telford police said they were investigating.
