West Lancashire taxi driver has his licence revoked Sep 2 2010 by Michael Byrne, Ormskirk Advertiser WEST Lancashire Council has won a legal case to help reinforce the importance of good standards to all taxi drivers in the borough. A private hire driver who failed to disclose a caution and several convictions has had his licence revoked by Preston Crown Court. Neil White, 41, of Chesterfield Drive, Kirkby, appeared before the council’s Licensing and Appeals Committee in July 2009. Mr White, who worked for Ormskirk Taxis and Coaches, had not disclosed a caution for burglary he received in June 2009 and had also failed to tell the council about a conviction for being in breach of the peace in 2003. The committee decided to revoke his licence on July 28 2009. Mr White appealed the decision to Ormskirk Magistrates Court and on April 15 it ruled his licence should not have been revoked. But the council, unhappy with the decision, appealed to Preston Crown Court. On August 20 the original decision of the licensing committee was upheld and Mr White’s private hire licence revoked. He was also ordered to pay £500 costs to the council. Councillor Andrew Fowler, portfolio holder for Community Services and Health welcomed the decision: “This is an important matter and I am pleased that the crown court has upheld the council’s decision to revoke Mr White’s licence. “A taxi driver employs a position of great trust. If they take a passenger out for the evening or to the airport, they will know when their house is empty, making it easier to burgle. The public must feel confident that this is not going to happen. “The vast majority of taxi drivers provide a safe and reliable service, however the council will always take action against individuals it feels are not fit and proper to hold a private hire licence.” http://www.osadvertiser.co.uk/news/orms ... -27180508/ |
