Taxi driver who parked in disabled bay faces one year off the road

Mayo Advertiser, September 03, 2010.

A taxi driver who, after being told by gardaí to move from being parked on a double yellow line, was observed parked in a disabled bay, was convicted, fined, and disqualified from driving by Judge Mary Devins.

At Castlebar District Court on Wednesday, the court heard that on January 6, Atanas Iliev Marcev, 49 Lakeshore Drive, Castlebar, was observed parked on a double yellow line on Hopkins Road. The defendant, who was in the car, was asked to move. Seven minutes later at 5.14pm, Marcev was observed parked in a disabled spot outside An Post. Gardaí were responding to a call at the time and could not stop, however a fine was issued. This was not paid.

The defendant represented himself and contested the matter. The Bulgarian national said that he was not in town that day and said that a ticket was never received.

Marcev, who has no previous convictions, was convicted and fined €300 and disqualified from driving for one year.
