Taxi driver fined £80 over £350 robbery claim

A CABBIE fined for making up a story that he had been robbed at knife-point has come under fire from one of the trade's bosses. The unnamed 38-year-old was given an £80 fixed penalty notice for wasting police time after coming up with an elaborate story about being robbed by a passenger at Baglan Way in Port Talbot.

Neath Port Talbot Taxi Proprietors Association secretary Bob Hoyles said he had heard about the apparent robbery and had been very concerned about it. But he was extremely disappointed, he said, when he found out it had been made up.

"We do not want drivers making false reports to police," he said. "Otherwise there is a danger of a cry wolf situation. "We are trying to develop a good relationship with the police. If there are incidents where people have attacked a driver or made off without paying, we want police to be confident they are genuine.

"But if people are going to start making false reports they are not going to take us seriously. "I am disappointed a member of the trade has done something like this. At a time when the trade is struggling badly, we need the public to have confidence in us."

The cabbie reported the incident on Tuesday, saying he had been flagged down by a member of the public and threatened with a five-inch knife before having £350 stolen.

He gave the police a detailed description of his "attacker", and was driven around the area in a police car to point out where the incident had happened and where the robber had ran off to. But when questioned by detectives he admitted the report was false.

Chief Inspector Jason James of Neath Port Talbot police said: "Robberies are few and far between in the Neath Port Talbot area and robberies using weapons such as the one described by this individual are extremely rare.

"When they do occur then a full investigation is conducted which has resulted in a very high detection rate for robbery. "This report was treated seriously and prompted a response which could have diverted us from a genuine victim of crime.

"We will always do all we can to help and support victims of crime and bring offenders to justice. "However, behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated and we will deal with those who fabricate incidents, wasting our time and making us less able to deal with genuine victims of crime who need our help."

Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief;
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of beef;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy wasn't in;
I jumped upon his Sunday hat and poked it with a pin.
Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a sham;
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of lamb;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was away,
I stuffed his socks with sawdust and filled his shoes with clay.
Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a cheat,
Taffy came to my house, and stole a piece of meat;
I went to Taffy's house, Taffy was not there,
I hung his coat and trousers to roast before a fire.[1]

What amazes me when people come up with some of these stories is they are gobsmacked when you don't believe their lies !!
