Taxi driver Kai Price to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats to help cancer charity

9:38am Monday 6th September 2010

A taxi driver from York is swapping four wheels for two later this month when he aims to cycle the length of the country to raise money for a cancer charity.

Kai Price will get on his bike to pedal from Land’s End to John O’Groats, and hopes his trek will draw in thousands of pounds for Harrogate-based Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR).

He is taking on the challenge in memory of his mother, Ellen, who died from lung cancer last year. Kai has seen first-hand the work of the charity’s scientists because his girlfriend, Dr Fiona Frame, is one of those whose work designed to develop a cure for prostate cancer at the University of York is funded by YCR.

“I want to play my part in the fight to eliminate this horrible disease,” said Kai, who recently held a cake sale and raffle in the university’s biology department to raise additional sponsorship.

“Fiona also lost her father to cancer and, being a cancer scientist, she knows a discovery in one type of cancer can have an impact on other kinds and lead to a breakthrough. That’s why I wanted to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research, who fund so much of this work, as a breakthrough in Yorkshire can impact cancer research all over the world.

“I would like to thank everybody who has sponsored me so far, especially family, friends, customers and Six Five Nine Taxis, the company I work for.”

Fraser Hart, Nestlé, Melton’s Too, York Theatre Royal and City Screen, York have also contributed to Kai’s quest by donating raffle prizes for his fundraising event. He said: “It’s going to be long, hard road and every pound donated will spur me on, particularly if there’s lots of wind and rain.”

Kai’s ride started yesterday and you can follow his progress on YCR’s Facebook page, as well as sponsoring him at justgiving.com/cycleagainstcancer

A good cause..........Its a bloody shame the guy needs to Ride a bike to raise money for such likes..the more the charities kindly donate to research the more the governments sits back and lets them pay for what the government should unquestionably be contributing to themselves..
