Taxi association warns of delays during Eid festival

11:08am Wednesday 1st September 2010

A taxi drivers association is warning customers of reduced service and long delays later this month as its Muslims members prepare to celebrate the Eid festival.

The Wycombe Private Hire Trade Association - made up of town centre Hackney carriage drivers and private hire cabbies, and whose members are all Muslim – said '99 per cent' of its members will not be operating between 7am and 6pm on Friday, September 10.

This is because Muslim cabbies will be attending prayers and spending time with their families as part of Eid ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.

Association spokesman Zia Ullah said some drivers will be back on the road at about 1.30pm, with full service expected to be resumed at 6pm.

Emergency taxi requests will, however, be considered during that morning.

He added: “The prayers do not only mark the end of fasting but will also be for reflection for those that have lost their lives during the Pakistan floods.

“The Association would also like to take this time to thank our customers for their concern, donations and support during this disaster.”

Taxi firms 'expect to be busy' but say they will be running as usual with the drivers they have avalable.

Yeh . . . . but if the moon's orbit throws a wobbly, then it could be Thursday, Setpember 9th, or more likely Saturday, September 11th.

It all depends whether the moon is keeping to the speed limit, crawling along, or speeding!!

It must be hard to say How many are Muslim anywhere in the country at the moment. In Manchester I would say it is probably 90% muslim in both PH and Hackney. All new applicants are generally Muslim.
I believe it is similar in all large Cities with the exception of Liverpool.

That would be cos the only religion allowed in Liverpool is Scouse  I don't think it's good for the public to suffer due to religious beliefs tho, but, not really sure anything could or would be done about it

This is probably the worst year yet with the Muslim drivers taking the minimal time off for Mosk and fasting..............they are practically back before they have gone

In years gone by it used to make a big difference to ones take, but it would now seem that the god of money is taking over.............they have become westernised

Not in the London trade it ain't.

The London Minicab trade, yes, but not the real London Cabbies.

We're 98% British and proud.

At least nobody will have to worry about being driven by a driver who's blood sugar level is dangerously low.............at least until next year

What a good point, driving for hours on an empty stomach, can't be good for concentration

Not had any problems with the muslim drivers working for me i think they tend to eat well during darkness hours so its just like having a late breakfast really since they are usually not up before 2 or 3 pm

Oh and eid could be thursday/friday saturday or sunday so there could be a good night to be had in some towns if its friday or saturday !

So far sunset has proved to be very lucrative with a very busy 30 to 40 minutes should be 19.50 tonight

Unless you are diabetic, your body should control your blood sugar level automatically.
