A taxi driver lied to police that he had been the victim of a robbery in Camperdown Park, Dundee Sheriff Court heard today.
Douglas Leitch (54), Lorimer Street, admitted wasting police time between June 10 and 11 by making the false claim and so leaving members of the public liable to be suspected and accused of robbery.
His guilty plea was lodged on his behalf by solicitor Theo Finlay and Leitch did not appear in the dock.

Canterbury taxi licences refused after convictions

Four applications for taxi driver licences have been refused by Canterbury City Council, two have been revoked and one has been suspended. The authority said the decisions followed convictions relating to drugs, assault, and using threatening words and behaviour.

Other reasons for denying licences included cautions for criminal damage, assault, and poor driving standards. The council said licences were only denied if drivers did not pass checks.

The council's commercial health manager Roger Vick said: "There has been a lot of publicity recently about the number of private hire and taxi licences in the Canterbury district.

"It is important to stress that we are legally unable to deny someone a licence if they have the right to work in this country, pass checks such as a Criminal Records Bureau check and a local knowledge test, and meet the residential requirements.

"However, when there are good reasons to either deny or revoke a licence, such as in these examples, we won't hesitate to do so." He added: "The safety of the public when using private hire and taxi vehicles is of paramount importance to the council. "Local people have a right to expect the vehicle they are getting into is driven by a competent and responsible person."
