Illegal taxi man guilty

A man has been convicted of operating an illegal taxi following an undercover operation by licensing officers. Kevin Ellis, of Rempstone Road, Belton, pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to have a private hire driver's licence and a private hire operator's licence when he appeared at Hinckley Magistrates' Court.

The court heard the council had received information that Ellis was operating illegally in December and had warned him he needed to obtain the correct licences. According to the council, Ellis explained that because he and his vehicle were licensed by Charnwood Borough Council he thought he could operate in North West Leicestershire.

He was ordered to pay a total of £3,700, including a £750 fine for each offence, costs of £2,185 and a victim surcharge of £15.

When he was subsequently interviewed by the officers Ellis said because both he and his vehicle were licensed by Charnwood Borough Council he thought that it was okay to operate within North West Leicestershire.

I'm guessing he was operating in an area where he didn't have an ops license.

Do you mean like having an office in North West Leicestershire to take bookings? If he just took work in that area through an office in Charnwood then he had the required licences
