Watford taxi driver fined A taxi driver licensed only to carry pre-booked passengers has been fined £500 after picking up two undercover police officers. Iqbal Ahmed, from Kensington Avenue, Watford, pleased guilty to collecting the officers from Hempstead Road to North Approach in March when their journey had not been arranged through A1 Cars. Two Special Constables, working with Watford Borough Council’s licensing enforcement officer, were carrying out an operation to detect cab drivers offering illegal journeys when they spotted Ahmed waiting in the lay-by near The Horns pub. The officers approached Ahmed and asked to go to North Approach where other unformed officers were awaiting their arrival. Ahmed agreed to the journey and took the fare on the meter. Subsequently he was convicted of “plying for trade” and driving with insufficient insurance and was fined £150 for the offence, £200 for insufficient insurance and £150 costs awarded to Watford Borough Council, on Monday, October 4. Councillor Jan Brown, chairman of Watford Borough Council's licensing committee, said: “This operation was undertaken following requests from the Hackney Carriage trade to deter illegal drivers. “Members of the public should be careful not to use unlicensed vehicles to travel home after a night out in Watford as the drivers may not be licensed or CRB checked. Drivers who illegally ply for hire will not usually be covered by insurance for the journey.” |
