Taxi driver’s cab vandalised in row with passengers

Association chief urges cabbies to instal CCTV cameras for protection

A Dundee taxi driver suffered verbal abuse and had her taxi vandalised in the early hours of yesterday. The driver had picked up three men and three women in the Hilltown area of the city at around 2am and was taking them to the Fintry area when she overheard one of them saying they would try to run away without paying.

On hearing this, she stopped on the southbound carriageway of the A90 Dundee to Forfar road, near the junction with Claverhouse Road, and asked for the full fare. The group handed over the money but on leaving, the three men repeatedly kicked the white, London-style taxi before smashing the rear windscreen.

Dundee Taxi Association chairman Graeme Stephen said the incident was deplorable. He said: “I would encourage all taxi drivers, especially women, to have a CCTV system installed in their cab. The images are then fed back to the police and the council. I have put one in and it is proving a good deterrent. I also experienced non-payment of a big fare and verbal abuse a couple of weeks ago. The police saw the CCTV footage and when they went to the person’s door, he paid up immediately.

“I have a small flat screen in my cab that passengers can see. It cost £750 to instal but there are cheaper versions, and taxi drivers can also rent the equipment. “This kind of attack shouldn’t happen but it does, more and more.”

Tayside Police said the men were all aged about 18. One had a large nose which looked as if it had previously been broken, and very short light brown hair. He was wearing a grey hooded top and jeans.

The second was well-built with brown curly hair and wearing a light blue shell suit. The third man had dark brown hair and was wearing a striped polo shirt. Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact them on 0300 111 2222.

Why would a vehicle designed for 6 be only plated for 5?

My FX4 was a 7 seater, 3 pull downs behind the screen and a jump seat in the front
BTW it could have been an E7 as there is mo mention of make of cab, only a London style one and as we are allowed to use any type of London style cab in Scotland it could even have been an MPV with a top sign :D

Remember this is a press article, so a London style cab could be an E7.

I have to admit that when I read the headline I thought Dundee's own councillors had attacked this cabby

The cab involved was a TX11....so it goes to show that brains are not in abundance here with.....

1. The driver
2. The Police.
3. The DTA Chairman
4. The reporter
