Taxi drivers suspend strike pending Kostunica meeting

BELGRADE -- Friday – Belgrade’s protesting taxi drivers have agreed to suspend their strike after a promise that Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica will meet them today.

Unless the meeting happens, said union leader Milivoje Armus, radical measures will be taken.

“If these negotiations with the prime minister don’t succeed, there will be a general strike throughout Serbia in which everyone will be involved, all trades, from hospitality, bakers, retail, taxis, bus drivers and this will be a whole new level,” said Armus, who is the president of he Belgrade Taxi Drivers Association.

The cabbies are demanding that the number of operators in Belgrade remain limited to seven and a half thousand, that local governments are given the right to regulate taxi services and set fares, that unlicensed drivers are cleared from the streets, and that approval be given for tax-free imports of vehicles up to six years old.

The Belgrade taxi drivers say they believe these demands will all be met.
