Taxi driver's car ends up in Aspley Basin

November 20, 2010

A taxi driver’s trip to Aspley Basin ended up with that sinking feeling.

The driver from GT Cars is thought to have accidentally put the red Skoda into reverse and ended up in Huddersfield Broad Canal along with his cab.

The man wound down the window and managed to escape as his taxi came to a very soggy end.

It remained in the basin for several days, but was causing problems as it was right in the way of canal boats.

The car was recovered by Huddersfield-based Britannia Rescue, which called in a specialist rescue team from Cleckheaton Fire Station to help them to retrieve it from the canal.

Two crews arrived at Aspley at 3pm yesterday and a large crowd gathered to watch the recovery operation.

Cleckheaton watch commander Colin Brown said that it was good training for his team.

They inflated pathways so they could get around the car and get chains and straps just underneath the roof.

The car’s roof was just six inches below the surface of the water with its aerials sticking out.

Watch commander Brown said: “We had to smash the windows to get the straps and chains in and then dragged the car to the side before we were able to lift it onto the quayside.’’

Both Britannia Rescue and GT Taxis said they were unable to comment about the incident that led to the car careering into the water.

According to Captain Cab, they don't have a good reputation for anything!

That's not what he said.

He said they have a reputation for noisy, knackered gearboxes.
