Taxis ordered off the road after safety checks

THREE taxis have been ordered off the road following safety checks.

They were found to have inadequate tyre-tread depth during a joint Cardiff council and police operation in the city centre.

The drivers involved were issued with fixed penalty notices. A total of 106 taxis were subject to stop checks during the crackdown.

Sergeant Karen McNeil said: “Vehicles were subject to basic safety checks such as lights, tyres, first-aid kits and fire extinguishers and the drivers authenticated by checking their licence badges. The stops were well received by the majority of cab drivers who were all compliant and it is pleasing that the overwhelming majority of the vehicles were in excellent condition.

“Passengers, in the main, appeared reassured by the checks being undertaken.”

Chief Inspector Alun Morgan said: “These initial results are encouraging, but with so many people visiting the capital in the run-up to Christmas, people need to be aware that we will be repeating these exercises.”
