Taxi driver 'raped passenger after she flagged down black cab'

A woman was sexually assaulted then raped after getting into a black cab in Manchester. The woman, aged in her 20s, flagged down a traditional black Hackney carriage shortly before 1am on Saturday in the Shudehill area.

Police said that after driving off, the driver made lewd comments towards her before he stopped the vehicle on Ash Street in Harpurhey. He climbed onto the back seat and sexually assaulted her before driving to the junction of Ash Street and Cyprus Street where she managed to get out.

Police said she waited a few minutes then walked off but the driver returned, grabbed her from behind and raped her. An image of the man was released today. He is described as Asian, aged between 30 and 40 years old, chubby with short black hair and stubble. The woman has been interviewed by trained officers and offered specialist counselling and medical services.

Det Insp Nick Hughes said: “The victim was subjected to an awful sexual assault by a man she had trusted to take her home. I want to reassure the community we believe this is an isolated incident and are working closely with the taxi licensing officers.

“There is no reason that this incident should deter people from going out over the festive period and I would reiterate that getting a pre-booked taxi home after a night out is one of the best ways to keep safe.”

Call Grey Mare Lane CID on 0161 856 5340 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

That doesn't say much for the safety of flagging down a hackney

I always wonder this but far be it for me to comment on the stupidity of some girls :-| If true I'm sure this young lady is already traumatised enough without having to admit she may have been a little naive in this situation

Let's hope they catch the dirty rat! Surely with the amount of cctv around towns and the description then drivers can be eliminated and ID parades and forensics hopefuly they can catch the beast. Once caught let's see if he's actually lived in this country for the length of time a british citizen's CRB is checked back to and if not then the council that issued the license should be brought to book as well.
