What I do know though is that 90% of London taxis are under 15 years, so as per usual it will be the shed owners / renters that will make the most noise.
But I think very few will be listening.

15 year limit coming in for London. Sensible limit if you ask me, 15 years is plenty of life for a taxi. |

Yes, apparantly LTC need more used stock for their new branches, especialy the new Galasheils branch.

We have had this in blackpool for a while,but i dont really get if your cab passes its inspection/overhaul why does age matter ? We licence anything here and theres a lot of difference between a 15 year old mondeo and a purpose built hackney |

Pretty daft when you think about it................you could get a cab triple shifted @ say 120,000 miles P.A x 15 years= 1,800,000 miles OR a part timer doing say 20,000 miles P.A x 15 years=300,000 miles, and they both have to come off the road 
What it shows is a complete lack of thought, and is more cosmetic than mechanical. |

Any trade that thinks it's ok to use 15 year old motors deserves the contempt we/they are shown. £50,000 plates on a £50 sheds isn't something we should be supporting. |

I dont really buy that argument as shown here in blackpool.There are a lot of 12 13 14 year old fairways which are immaculate owner driven and looked after.We have to go over a overhaul every 4 months which is a strict test and the occasional roadside pulls ! Yet people put 6 7 8 year old cabs which are f$%^ed .The vast majority of Wav vehicles are bought from london and in good condition. Age doesnt and shouldnt come into it. |

London mayor's pollution strategy targets black cabs The oldest black cabs are to removed from London's roads under measures to improve air quality. From 1 January 2012 licences will not be issued for Hackney carriages that are more than 15 years old. It is part of the mayor's air quality strategy, Clearing London's Air, and is expected to affect about 1,200 taxis. The Licensed Taxi Drivers Association (LTDA) welcomed the move but critics said the strategy was a "half-baked plan that doesn't do the job". According to the mayor's office road traffic is responsible for about 80% of airborne pollution in central London, with black cabs contributing 20% of this. London Assembly Green Party member Darren Johnson accused London Mayor Boris Johnson of taking backwards steps. He urged him to act urgently and introduce road pricing, the "proper inspection" of black cabs, and a "very low emission zone" to target vehicles in central London. Eco-driving course The mayor's proposal is expected to reduce airborne PM10 emissions in central London by around 13% by 2011 and by about a third by 2015, compared to 2008. A LTDA spokesman said the policy targeting old black cabs was a "good compromise between bringing the improvements we all want and avoiding the serious financial hardship that the 10 year age limit, supported by Darren Johnson and the Green Party, would have inflicted on the taxi trade". As well as the restrictions on old cabs, all black cabs will be required to undergo two full MOT tests instead of the current annual check. And new cab drivers will also have to undertake an eco-driving course, which teaches efficient driving to reduce costs as well as emissions from January 2012. The mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have also announced a £1m fund to encourage taxi owners to upgrade to low emission vehicles such as electric black cabs. That two mots a year sounds like a good deal.We have the certificate of compliance here and they make it a lot harder than any mot.Bet the usual garages in london dont like it,that yearly pull your pants down bill no more. |
