Thugs jailed for killing taxi driver in ‘vicious and unprovoked attack’

Two thugs have been jailed today for killing a taxi driver in a ‘vicious and unprovoked attack’.

Granddad-of-six Anthony Leigh, 62, was stabbed in the street in Clayton after a botched robbery, and died seven months later.

The stab wound was a ‘significant and substantial cause’ of a chain of events that led to Mr Leigh’s kidney failure and death, jury was told.

Nathan Livesey, 19, and Declan Fitzsimons, 20, were found guilty of manslaughter after a trial in October and jailed for the public’s protection.

They must each serve a minimum of eight years before being considered for release.

Livesey, of Shackleton Court, Newton Heath, and Fitzsimons, of Chesham Avenue, Wythenshawe, denied the charges against them.

Mr Leigh picked up the two men from the Bay Horse pub in Clayton Bridge, Newton Heath, in January last year. He took them to Vale Street in Clayton.

Fitzsimons held a 12-inch knife to Mr Leigh’s throat and demanded his car keys but Mr Leigh told them that they would have to ‘kill him first’ and ran away.

Fitzsimons ran after him and plunged the knife through his ribs and into his left kidney and spleen, the court heard.

Livesey was also found guilty of manslaughter for being in “joint enterprise” with Fitzsimons.
