Pupil left by taxi had 10-mile walk back

A taxi firm has launched an investigation after a group of pupils were taken to the wrong school and had to walk back 10 miles in subzero temperatures.

Shaun Thorley, 15, of Kettering, was due to study at Montsaye Community College in Desborough on Friday, but Kettering taxi firm KLM took him to Tresham College in Corby.

Angry mum Angela said: "It was scary for him.

"They had no way of contacting the school because they didn't have the number and had no credit. Two police cars drove past and didn't stop. It was absolutely ridiculous."

Shaun studies at Latimer Arts College in Barton Seagrave most days and has lessons at Tresham College once every two weeks.

But on Friday he was due to study at Montsaye because Tresham was closed for the winter holidays. Shaun has caught a cold after the three-and-a-half-hour walk back to Barton Seagrave.

Mrs Thorley, of Settlers Fields, said Shaun told the taxi driver they needed to go to Desborough, but KLM's owner said this is unlikely.

Mike Deeley said: "If the kids were not comfortable getting out in Corby the driver would normally contact the school or the office. We don't believe that to be the case.

"We had no reason to believe that the students should have been taken anywhere else. The first we were aware of the situation was when we were contacted by the school early Friday afternoon.

"KLM Taxis have a wealth of successful experience in transporting children and vulnerable adults and as such are taking this matter extremely seriously.

"We are carrying out our own investigation and we are also co-operating fully with the investigation carried out by the school."

No-one from Latimer Arts College was available for comment.

We are told that we can only take pupils to the address on the contract. If we take them anywhere else and something happens to them we could lose the contract or worse. Unless the transport department had authorised the change of destination to the company there would be little that the driver could do.

same here GD but this is 2010, everyone (kids, parents, drivers) have phones, were the gates shut at the drop? did the kids decide a day off was in order? was it a new driver unware of the regular change and irregular closings?

i can ring the eductaion from 7am, trouble is my pupils do saturdays, im on my own then!

hadnt they got the bus fare home?....15 year olds?.....phones?...no parents with cars?.......

I can understand them wanting to leave corby pronto but if they were dropped off at Tresham college were they on the right transport or was the taxi firm not told of the change of venue ? Sounds a bit fishy to me and as pointed out why didn't they go to reception at Tresham and say something or even catch a bus back to Kettering thees plenty of those not sure if theres one between kettering and Barton although I would be surprised if there isn't theres plenty go past Wickstead park so they must go to barton
