Hit-and-run taxi driver is hunted after Bournemouth incident

POLICE are hunting a taxi driver who sped away after mounting the pavement and mowing down a Poole teenager. The 19-year-old suffered cuts to his face, knees and hands and was treated by paramedics following the frightening incident in Ensbury Avenue, Bournemouth in the early hours of Sunday, December 12. The yellow taxi ploughed into the Poole man at 2.40am in the latest in a series of hit-and-run incidents in Bournemouth.

A 23-year-old man was left with two broken arms after being struck by a car in Poole Road in late November and a 12-year-old boy was left lying at the side of the road after being hit by a car in Wimborne Road, Winton, earlier in the month.

In the latest incident the pedestrian was knocked to the ground by the taxi driver, who is described as being of Asian appearance. “I understand that the victim was walking along the pavement in a westbound direction when the taxi left the road and collided with him” said investigating officer PC Rich Elston of Bournemouth police. “I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this collision, and anyone with information about the taxi or the taxi driver, to contact me as soon as possible.”

PC Elston said it is not clear why the taxi left the road and urged the driver to ‘do the right thing and speak with the police’. He added: “The victim was fortunate not to sustain far worse injuries and it’s important to find out exactly what happened.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Dorset Police on 01202 222222, quoting reference number 12:89 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111. Mobile phone tariffs may apply.

Could it be that more and more drivers are feeling the impact of working longer and longer hours, that is apart from those that deliberately mow down people

I think there is often an element of fear of the consequences of owning up And belief that they can't be traced certainly round here the asian community often closes ranks to hide wrong doers. Yesterday one of our customers was driving his own car down at the station and was reversed into by a taxi the driver gave him a card with his "details" on the card had a differant drivers name no registration number and was for another taxi firm ! I was asked by his son to find out what i could and surprise surprise none of the local asian drivers are prepared to say who was actually driving and which firm he worked for although I think I have identified that part the driver whose name was on the card was apparently not working that day unfortunately the customer who is getting on a bit didn't take the reg number of the car ( a bit remiss really as he was an insurance broker by trade !)
