Council freezes taxi tariffs after plea by Cumbrian cabbies Taxi fares across Allerdale will remain the same this year after a plea from drivers at a meeting of Allerdale council’s licensing committee. Former chairman of the now defunct Workington Taxi Association Steve Robinson asked councillors at yesterday’s meeting at The Wave Centre in Maryport to keep tariffs the same as raising them could price firms out of the market. Mr Robinson said any increase would affect the “little old ladies on Murray Road”. He added that if any increase was applied he would like to see it done by bringing forward the higher late-night tariff to apply after 11pm instead of midnight. He said: “Then it would only affect the night-time drinkers. It would mean they would have to go easy on the stout and budget for a taxi home after a good night but it wouldn’t affect the pensioners during the day.” Other taxi drivers had written to the council asking for fares to be increased. Councillor Peter Bales said that it would be fairer for everyone if the fares remained at a starting price of £2.90. After the meeting Sue McKenzie, of Sue’s Taxis, said: “We’re delighted with the result and by doing it this way it means we can come back during the year and reassess the pricing.” Mr Robinson said: “We would have to reassess the pricing if the coalition government reneged on their promise to freeze petrol prices. If they go up even further then we would have to put up our prices.” source: http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/ |

I'll never understand why they don't want increases when they can discount the fares and advertise that they do
