Cabbie delivers own son in back of taxi

A Hamilton taxi driver dramatically helped deliver his baby son in the back of his cab.

A HAMILTON taxi driver showed calm under pressure by helping to deliver his baby son in the back of his cab.

Hamilton TOA chairman Gordon Frew was driving his pregnant wife to hospital just after 7am Tuesday. He was forced to stop in a lay-by near the Holiday Inn Express in Keith Street, Hamilton, when the pace of her labour quickened.

Mr Frew called emergency services and an ambulance, and paramedic response unit turned up at 7.08am. They delivered the baby boy with delighted George in attendance.

Staff at the hotel are used to weary travellers turning up on their doorstep but this was a different ‘new arrival’.

Hotel employee Mark Harkison had only just started his shift when he saw blue lights flashing outside.

He said: “Shortly after 7am I noticed there were car lights on and a vehicle parked outside the hotel.

“Then, within a matter of minutes, two ambulances appeared and a while later there was a third ambulance.

“There was a guy in the back seat of the car helping the lady.

“At the time I wasn’t sure what had happened. I didn’t know whether it was someone having a heart attack or an accident.

“But not long after the ambulances left, the man’s mother came in to tell us that the woman had given birth to a baby boy.

“I am told they were on their way to hospital when they had to pull into the lane.

“You just don’t expect that kind of start to a shift.

“I’ve joked that they should call the boy Keith after the street where he was born!”

Holiday In Express Hamilton manager Mark Calpin said: “We are delighted for the family for the birth of the child and wish them all the very best.”

George is well known in Hamilton as chairman of the town’s Taxi Owners’ Association (TOA).

Two years ago he was at the forefront of a campaign against plans to hike taxi fares.
