Taxi drivers in Shrewsbury protest over changes Up to 200 taxi drivers were due to take to the streets today in Shrewsbury to protest over a proposed shake-up for black cabs in Shropshire. Fears of traffic chaos have been sparked after drivers announced plans to leave Abbey Foregate car park at 1pm and take their protest around Shrewsbury town centre and the Shirehall. It is in protest against Shropshire Council’s plans to de-zone the county’s taxi structure. Currently the county is zoned into five different areas, based on the old borough districts of Bridgnorth, north Shropshire, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Atcham and south Shropshire. With the council’s plans to repeal the by-laws on zoning, and create one zone, following a move to a unitary authority, a single rate card will be set for the county. Drivers claim that fares in Shrewsbury will rocket by up to 300 per cent and say a standard trip from the train station in and around the town could cost up to £15 under the de-zoning policy. Taxi drivers in go-slow protest in Shrewsbury Taxi drivers have staged a go-slow protest in Shropshire over a proposed change in licensing laws. The driver said that the plans mean more drivers from anywhere in the county could operate in Shrewsbury. Richard Price, from Shrewsbury Drivers Action Group, said it will mean an influx of drivers without local knowledge. Shropshire Council said it was trying to introduce a "safe, consistent and fair standard" across Shropshire. Councillor Rosanna Taylor-Smith, chair of Shropshire Council's strategic licensing committee, said: "When the districts, boroughs and county councils all joined to become Shropshire Council in 2009, there were significantly inconsistent approaches to taxi licensing within the county. 'Not fair' "To give all taxi users the assurance of a safe, consistent and fair standard across Shropshire, the council is looking at ways to provide this regular approach." But Mr Price said the plans were not fair. "We want to retain our black livery, we hope to retain local knowledge for drivers and are hoping to prevent a fare increase for the customers of our town. "The protest will raise customer awareness and public awareness of what is going on and what the council is forcing on us. "It's not fair. It will mean an influx of drivers with no local knowledge who won't offer a service the public expects." A council spokesman said a consultation about the plans was ongoing and no decision has been made. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sh ... e-12309562 |

If you knew what the tariff on the Table of Fares was for North Shropshire & South Shropshire before the Unitary Authority was formed, you would not be making such ill-imformed comments!! It is quite possible that the UA has adopted one of those tariffs for the whole of the new LA. If so, the 2007 waiting times on those tariffs were £24 an hour on one & £30 an hour on the other, but I can't remember which way round they were. |

Perhaps you're the ill-informed one? Quote: If so, the 2007 waiting times on those tariffs were £24 an hour on one & £30 an hour on the other, but I can't remember which way round they were.
Obviously well up to speed on things.
And how precisely do you justify the 300% figure, even approximately. That means the fare would be four times what it is at present, which seems unlikely. |

\Yes, everyone's all sweetness and light on here, aren't they?
Presumably different rules apply to me
I mean abusing people, threats, racism, homophobia etc etc is OK, but questioning what looks like an exaggerated claim in an aritlce is just not on, is it?
Now perhaps you can justify calling me ill-informed or perhaps people will just think you've thrown your toys out of the pram because you can't and are trying to deflect attention.
