Verdict due in rape trial

A jury is due to begin deliberations today in the case of a private hire driver accused of raping a drunk student in Earley.

Adeel Imtiaz denies forcing the then-19-year-old brunette to perform oral sex on him in the early hours of November 10, 2008.

The court previously heard he had picked up the alleged victim who had been returning home on her own after going to the Carnage club night in Reading town centre.

Imtiaz, from Liverpool Road, Newtown, is accused of forcing her to give him oral sex in the back of his vehicle in Palmer Park Avenue. Imtiaz denies rape, claiming the sex was consensual.

During the trial this week the court heard how the married 33-year-old had commented on the girl’s PVC nurse’s dress and breasts. He admitted he had sucked them through the gap in the front seats of the people carrier and got into the back at her request.

He also admitted performing a sex act on her on the back seat and claimed she had placed his hand between her legs before giving him oral sex.

The student, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said he pinned her down in the back of the vehicle but this conflicted with other statements including where she said he was sitting next to her and forced her head into his crotch.

Imtiaz denied performing a sex act with the girl but admitted he had later that night after stains were found on his trousers.

Giving evidence last Friday, Imtiaz admitted he had followed her in his vehicle after she left and shouted out his number to her but denied this was to try to cover-up what he had done.

Cross-examining, Meyrick Williams, prosecuting, said: “The truth of the matter is you knew there were drunk people about and knew this girl was on her own and could see she was drunk, and you abused your position as a taxi driver to rape her. That is correct, isn’t it?”

“No,” replied Imtiaz.

The trial continues.

Also in court yesterday, Judge Nicholas Wood read out a statement to the jury.

He said: “The defendant, Mr Imtiaz, was issued with a Hackney Carriage licence by South Oxfordshire District Council on October 15, 2008.

“At the time of the incident, ie November 10, 2008, he had a private hire licence from Reading Borough Council.

“Reading Borough Council issued him with a Hackney Carriage licence on January 14, 2009.”

Driver accused of rape walks free from court

A private hire driver wept in the dock as a jury cleared him of rape on Wednesday.

Adeel Imtiaz, 33, of Liverpool Road, Newtown, had been accused of attacking a 19-year-old student on November 10, 2008, in his licensed vehicle in Palmer Park Avenue, East Reading.

Mr Imtiaz protested his innocence, telling Reading Crown Court the oral sex with the girl was consensual.

The jury took just under five hours to decide to acquit him and Judge Nicholas Wood told Mr Imtiaz he was free to go.

After the hearing Mr Imtiaz showed visible signs of distress and relief as a member of his family, who asked not to be named, spoke of his ordeal.

He told getreading: “As everyone knows, this has been going on for two-and-a-half years.

“He has been under great pressure for all that time.

“He has had to leave the area. He has been unable to work and to support his family. Finally we think the trial was fair and the truth prevailed.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support.”

The court was told Mr Imtiaz picked up the student – wearing a PVC nurse’s dress – in his people-carrier.

The teenager was returning on her own after a night out at a Carnage club night in Reading town centre.

The second year undergraduate claimed he had pinned her down in the back of the vehicle and attacked her.

But the court heard this conflicted with other statements she had made.

She also claimed to have been very drunk but a forensic report recording the level of alcohol in her blood in a sample taken on the morning of the alleged attack did not tally with the amount she claimed to have drunk.
