Cab drivers upset over bus lanes

Cabbies say using bus lanes would benefit passengers
Taxi drivers in Nottingham are staging a four-hour walkout over the right to drive in bus lanes.
The hackney cab drivers want the same rights as cabbies in Leicester and Derby who are allowed to use bus lanes.

The drivers, who say they have been campaigning for this right for the last 10 years, are expected to stop work on Monday afternoon.

They say it would benefit passengers too as journey times would be shorter and fares would be lower.

The hackney cab drivers also want Nottingham City Council to take more action against private-hire firms that illegally pick up people who flag them down in the street.

Councillor Brian Grocock, cabinet member for transport at the city council, said: "The difficulty we actually have is the bus company doesn't want hackney or private-hire cars in bus lanes.

"The police don't want them in bus lanes either because they can't police it and cyclists don't want them in bus lanes because of the safety aspect."

We're either an "integral part of the public transport system" or not.

Nottingham used to be NFTA members, I dont known who represents them now, not that it matters.

I have great sympathy with all those trying to get equal access, and any councillor that says otherwise should be hung, drawn and quatered.

This has been going on for years, the reason the Council won't let HC use bus lanes is all the PH will think they can use them thus creating a situation.

And why shouldn't they use them?

This is total bollox,there is a bus lane which runs from Broad Marsh to the railway station and hackneys can use this lane,theres even a seperate sign confirming this.Maybe cyclists aren't in danger using this stretch of road.Double standards,come on Mr Mortell,sort it out.

Further to that the lads driving PH in Edinburgh have got a similar problem.

Makes real sense does that, an Edinburgh PH can drive in a Glasgow bus lane, but not in his own manor's.

I think bus lanes is a crap term, they are surely public transport lanes.

With reference to PH using them, the vehicles must be suitably signed to ensure that other motorists dont try using them. Perhaps, hackneys first, then ph with hackney support?

P/H is not H/C.

There has been a ruling on this in London.

In Manchester there are lots of instances where H/C can use bus lane but not P/H chit.
Just how it should be inspite of what Suspect wants.

Kin ell Nidge,thats a bit strong,i dont know what happened in that area,but what i do know is that when he was in Derby he was the most helpful LO ive ever come across.The bloke couldnt do enough for you,although his hands were tied from the men upstairs.

Mr Chunky, Nigel lives in a world of his own, which thankfully the sensible amongst us don't inhabit.

But as his signature states, one shouldn't take a blind bit of notice of him.
