Taxis bring Durham to a standstill

MORE than 50 taxi drivers brought traffic to a standstill in Durham in a protest over plans to allow cabbies from outside the city to ply their trade there.


Drivers said the go-slow was intended to show the effect of allowing hundreds more cabs into the city.

Durham County Council wants to increase competition by allowing drivers from areas such as Peterlee and Seaham to work there.

But city drivers claims they are struggling to stay in business already, without facing more rival operators.

“This is going to put firms out of business,” said Adrian Fets, of Durham Independent Taxi Drivers’ Association.

“It will be gridlock in Durham City, there is going to be more pollution and there are going to be constant traffic jams as taxis drive round and round trying to get a parking space.”

Wheres the Logic in increasing competition from outside an area when theres probably too much localised competition in the first place...Is it mandatory for all councillors to be as thick as three short planks?

7% of the County Durham taxi trade responded to the council review of policy consultation......perhaps the councillors weren't entirely to blame?

Bet Mr Fets is not concerned about about Durham Hackney Carriages working from Private Hire offices in the Boroughs of Gateshead and North Tyneside, he just does not want his monopoly threatened
