Checks show half of Nelson taxis ‘not safe’

SPOT checks on taxis in Nelson found more than half of the vehicles stopped were unsafe.

Twelve out of the 21 taxis stopped failed the tests on the evening of Friday, March 4.

The majority had the faults fixed and were back on the road the next day.

Pendle Borough Council joined forces with police and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to run the operation.

Coun Pauline McCormick, chairman of the borough’s taxi licensing committee, said: “The number of taxis failing the test was disappointing compared to previous spot checks and I hope to see an improvement when the next spot check is carried out.

“We will continue to do evening spot checks on taxis with the police and VOSA throughout the year.

“If you want to report a taxi that you think may have defects, please get in touch with our taxi licensing team who will look into it.

“You might also want to tell us about a good service you’ve had from a Pendle taxi firm.”
