Brighton and Hove taxi drivers ask for fare rise

Cabbies have voted to increase passenger fares as drivers across the county brace themselves for another 5p-a-litre increase in fuel costs.

Drivers from the major cab firms in Brighton and Hove have decided to push for a small increase to offset the escalating cost of petrol and diesel.

At a meeting representatives submitted a request for a rise of an average of about 20p per trip with Brighton and Hove City Council.

If approved by the council licensing panel the increase will be introduced in July.

Andy Cheesman, the managing director of City Cabs, said drivers had been wary about setting the increase too high in case they drove business away.

He said cabbies are having to spend up to £15 extra on fuel per shift and that the increase would only put about an extra £20 a week in their pockets.

They must be going the long way round to spend this much more per shift. How long is a shift in Brighton?

So if the point is to offset the extra costs in fuel what would be the point of doing it if it doesn't really offset the costs :?

](*,) a thousand times ](*,)

Not that an increase isn't due, but why tell punters that there may be one in a few months time? ](*,)
