Telford black cab fare rises backed
Licensing chiefs today backed plans to raise fares for black cab users in Telford.
The proposed increase put forward by Telford Hackney Carriage Association would see an average two-mile journey cost about £2 more.
Drivers say it would be the first rise since 2005 and is essential in the face of rising costs.
Members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s licensing committee approved the request and people now have 28 days to raise objections.
Chief licensing officer Suzanne Fisher said: “These are the fares that are proposed by the trade, they know their own business and they know the price of the competition.”
Councillor Tracy Hope, said: “Realistically, given the price of petrol and diesel, I don’t think the increase is a great deal.”
Fellow committee member Councillor Hilda Rhodes added: “I believe we should go along with the recommendation, if the public are against the proposals we can come back with this committee and deal with it.”
Members voted unanimously to publish a formal notice advertising the proposed increases, and introduction of additional charges, and to consider any objections from the public.
As part of the proposals, a soiling charge of £30 will also be introduced for the first time.
