Quote: 2.2 In the event that the Committee decides to implement Option 1, it is recommended that
existing saloon Taxi Licence holders be allowed to apply in corporate names for new licences for WAV's from the list ultimately approved following consultation and that such applications would be exempt from the policy to limit the number of taxis provided they are prepared to surrender their current licence. Well I wonder why that is?

That aside, it seems that Dundee are looking to go 100% WAV and tying the capping issue to this. |

Very interesting report. It seems that all sides are jockying for position to suit heir own aims. Fact is, the taxi trade side is just cranking up a vested interest. They're not interested in the quality of service they provide, they just want to be able to buy and sell taxis, profit from doing so and when the shortage bites, crank up rentals for drivers and higher tariffs for customers. Customers and Drivers pay more. That's the model here in Edinburgh. Dundee City Council can see where the taxi trade wants to go. However, what is being proposed is challengeable. Section 10 (3) is an anachronism from a bygone age where rights weren't observed. That challenge will be coming soon. And the report clearly shows that the market has worked with cabs reducing in number in line with market conditions. The market has arrived at the fleet level Dundee ordinarily needs. The current problem is simply that the demand in the market has contracted and the supply side hasn't yet adjusted. But, as in the past, it would. There really is no need to restrict numbers, except to crank up vested trade interests. I suspect DCC knows this. But is happy to play along to get its WAV fleet. However, for DDC the options really are simple. The fleet can be left to the market to determine supply. Policy can be designed to force existing licence holders to move to WAV within a reasonable timescale - 3 to 5 years say. Customers get the service they need, drivers will continue to have access to their own vehicle if they want it, and the council gets the WAV fleet to meet its commitments under DDA. The only ones to lose out would be the greedy taxi trade vested interest trying to crank up their greed at the expense of all those above. BTW Isn't it disgusting that a trade union like UNITE should be playing capitalist greed politics which directly harm the interests and rights of workers? This simply shows how far trade unions, and the "Uncle Toms" in them, have departed from their raison d'etre - protecting the working class from exploitation. And why they are now substantially irrelevant in the class struggle. |
